The Minnesota Health Literacy Conference, co-hosted by the Memory Keepers Medical Discovery Team at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth Campus and the Minnesota Health Literacy Partnership is a convening of health professionals, educators, researchers, policymakers, and leaders in healthcare and advocacy organizations. In honor of October Health Literacy Awareness Month and Governor Walz’s signing of the Health Literacy Awareness Month Proclamation, the theme for the 2022 conference is Empowering Leadership, Policy, and Action.
Health literacy is an individual’s ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. Health literacy is also the ability of providers, health professionals, and organizations to speak plainly and provide information and services that are accessible, understandable, and culturally and linguistically appropriate. An estimated 9 in 10 Americans lack sufficient health literacy skills to maintain and improve their health and the health of their family and community.
